Almost every adult beginner has the same plan. The week is busy, so practice gets saved up for the weekend. Three uninterrupted hours, finally, to make some progress.
It rarely works, and the reason is not discipline.
Playing is a physical memory
Your hands learn the way any physical skill is learned, through repetition spread over time. A long session teaches your hands something on Sunday afternoon, then leaves six days for them to forget it.
What twenty minutes looks like
- Five minutes on the thing that is currently hardest
- Ten minutes on the song you are working through
- Five minutes playing something you already enjoy
That last five minutes matters more than it looks. Practice that never feels like music is practice you eventually stop doing.
Missing a day is fine
The students who progress are not the ones who never miss. They are the ones who miss a Tuesday and pick it up again on Wednesday without deciding the week is ruined.
