This policy explains what information Strums and Keys Academy collects, why we collect it, and the rights you have over it. It is written to be read, not to be skimmed past.
Strums and Keys Academy is a UK music academy teaching guitar, piano and bass, online and in person. We are the data controller for the personal information described in this policy, which means we are responsible for deciding how it is used and keeping it safe.
You can reach us about anything in this policy at hello@strumsandkeys.co.uk, or by writing to Studio 4, Bishop Lane, Manchester.
When you create an account we collect your name, email address and password. When you book a lesson or buy a program or course we collect your billing details and a record of what you have purchased.
If you contact us, we keep the messages you send. When you use the site we collect basic technical information such as your browser type, the pages you visit and how long you spend on them.
For students under 18, we collect the parent or guardian’s contact details rather than the child’s, wherever that is practical.
We use your information to run your account, deliver your lessons, programs and courses, take payment, and answer your questions. We also use it to let you know about things you have asked to hear about, such as new lesson slots opening up.
We do not use your information for anything unrelated to the academy, and we do not sell it to anyone.
Under UK GDPR we must have a lawful basis for each use of your information. Most of what we do rests on contract: we need your details to provide the lessons, programs and courses you have bought.
Some uses rest on legitimate interest, such as keeping basic records and improving the site. Where we send marketing email to people who have not bought from us, we rely on consent, and you can withdraw it at any time.
Card payments are processed by our payment provider. Your full card details go directly to them and are never stored on our servers or seen by us.
We keep a record of the transaction itself, the amount, the date and what was purchased, so we can manage your account and meet our accounting obligations.
We use a small number of cookies. Some are strictly necessary, for example to keep you signed in. Others help us understand which pages are useful and which are not, using privacy respecting analytics that do not track you across other websites.
You can set your browser to refuse cookies, though parts of the site such as signing in will stop working if you do.
If you buy from us we may email you about similar lessons, programs and courses we think you would find useful. Every one of these emails has an unsubscribe link, and clicking it takes effect straight away.
Emails about your account, your bookings or things you have asked for, such as a reset link or a new lesson slot, are service messages and are not marketing. We send those because they are part of providing what you signed up for.
We keep your account information for as long as your account is active. If you close your account we delete or anonymise your personal information within twelve months, except where the law requires us to keep it longer.
Financial records such as invoices are kept for six years, as required for UK tax purposes.
We share your information only with the services we need to run the academy: our payment provider, our email service, and our hosting and analytics providers. Each of them processes your information only on our instructions and under a contract that protects it.
We do not share your information with advertisers, and we would only disclose it to anyone else if the law required us to.
You have the right to ask for a copy of the information we hold about you, to have it corrected, and in many cases to have it deleted. You can object to certain uses, ask us to restrict how we use it, and withdraw consent where consent is the basis we rely on.
To use any of these rights, email hello@strumsandkeys.co.uk. We will respond within one month. If you are not satisfied with how we handle your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Questions about this policy or about your information are welcome at hello@strumsandkeys.co.uk, or by writing to Strums and Keys Academy, Studio 4, Bishop Lane, Manchester.
If anything in this policy is unclear, ask. We would rather explain it than have you wonder.
